Mechanical clocks go up the towers

Around 1275, the escapement appears, making possible the first mechanical clocks, installed in towers to ring bells. In 1336, Milan has the first known clock to strike every hour. Between 1371 and 1380, more than 70 European cities install public clocks: the day comes to be measured in equal hours.
