Jacquard's loom reads punched cards
Joseph-Marie Jacquard completes a loom that weaves complex patterns by following a chain of punched cards, like a program. Weavers in Lyon, afraid of losing their livelihood, force him to flee. When he dies, in 1834, there are more than 30,000 of these looms in Lyon alone.
