Babbage proposes a machine to calculate tables
Charles Babbage presents the Difference Engine, which would calculate and print tables without human error. The British government spends more than £17,000 before giving up. In 1837 he describes the Analytical Engine, programmable with cards like Jacquard's. Neither was completed in his lifetime.
