Vives proposes that the city support the poor
At the request of the city of Bruges, the humanist Juan Luis Vives publishes "De Subventione Pauperum": the municipal government should guarantee the subsistence of its poor residents, as long as those who are able work. The book becomes the basis of urban poor relief in 16th-century Europe.
