The queen and the stocking frame (legend)
The clergyman William Lee invents the mechanical stocking frame. Tradition has it that Elizabeth I refused the patent, fearing the machine would ruin her "poor subjects" by depriving them of employment and "making them beggars". Historians treat the line as a 19th-century legend, but it sums up a fear that would return many times.
