Cromford, the factory that never stopped
In Cromford, England, Richard Arkwright opens the first water-powered cotton spinning mill. From 1772 it runs day and night, in two 12-hour shifts. It starts with about 200 workers, mostly women and children, some of them seven years old. The model of the modern factory is born.
