The Writer, a programmable automaton
The Swiss watchmakers Pierre and Henri-Louis Jaquet-Droz finish three automata. The Writer, a wooden boy, writes with a quill any text of up to 40 letters, programmed on a wheel. It was advertising to sell watches to the nobility, and it still works today in Neuchâtel.
