Adam Smith and the pin factory
In "The Wealth of Nations", Adam Smith describes a workshop where ten men, divided across about 18 operations, make more than 48,000 pins a day. Alone and untrained, he says, each of them might not make even one. Breaking work into simple steps is the first step toward handing it over to machines.
