The Karnak water clock

Made of alabaster in the reign of Amenhotep III, it is the oldest surviving water clock. Water drains through a hole, and twelve columns of marks, one for each month, show the hours of the night for the priests' rites. Measuring time no longer depends on looking at the sky.
